Pascal shifted his weight, bamboo tines still buried, and tilted his head to check whether the stone disturbed any line beyond the small crater it occupied. Sunlight slid low across the surface, drawing bright edges around every groove he had already scored. Somewhere beyond the clay wall a wood pigeon muttered. Pascal resumed the stroke, determined to fold the puzzling visitor into the wider pattern.

Bamboo teeth hissed through the gravel, fastidious and even; still, each time the tines passed that orb they caught, broke rhythm, and left a crooked spur. Pascal’s fingers grazed the pebble; its surface felt unexpectedly warm, as though it had soaked sunshine longer than everything around it. He picked it up, weighed its perfectly balanced heft, then placed it on the moss border to clear the field. The next stroke travelled clean, and he released a measured breath. A shout rose from the entrance: “Gate’s off the hinge!” Orion’s voice bounced against cedar slats. Pascal propped the rake beside a stone; gravel cascaded from its tips, marking an abrupt pause.

He stepped outside the wall. The wooden gate leaned inward, hinge pin dangling halfway, an uninvited angle against the frame. Orion already steadied its weight, palms pressed flat to the grain. Pascal fetched the small mallet kept under the porch tile; together they nudged the pin home with meticulous taps that travelled through the timber like muffled drumbeats. A short gust unsettled bamboo leaves overhead, scattering dry sound that mingled with their hammering. When the pin seated flush, both men watched the gate swing once, then rest. Gravel scent reached them even here, sharp and cool. Pascal set the mallet aside and retraced the narrow path.

Light had shifted; ridges once stark now lay soft beneath a higher sun, and the furrows felt cooler against his bare feet. The rake stood where he left it, yet the moss border was empty—some creature or gravity itself had rolled the spherical pebble back onto the garden floor. It now sat in a shallow hollow near the largest anchor rock, half-buried, as if the gravel had leisurely swallowed part of it during his absence. Pascal paused, palm hovering above the ridges; he lifted the rake, then lowered it again, a silent reconsideration that left twin dents beside his toes. Finally, he drew new lines around the half-hidden orb, slower, letting the tines graze gravel until a softer rhythm emerged.
