The Tilting Plank at the Salt Pan-

English 原文
Every time Clara dragged the wooden rake through the thin crust, a slim plank at the channel mouth lifted, letting brine slide away. What secret joint made the plank rise with her stroke instead of staying flat like the others? She paused mid-sweep, the midday warmth wrapping her shoulders in a slow embrace while a shimmer of salt dust hovered against the glare. A narrow peg linked the plank to a taut cord hidden beneath the water; each tug on the rake pulled the cord a fraction tighter. When the tension peaked, the plank tipped and a clear ribbon of brine plunged into the lower basin with a soft plop. Clara traced the line of the cord with her eyes, curious yet unwilling to break the rhythm of scraping.
A sudden clatter echoed from the shade of the tool shed, cutting across the flat panorama of white pools. She turned; a gust had rolled the empty wooden bucket from its perch, launching it into the shallow channel where it bobbed awkwardly. Salt-water sloshed over the rim and spattered her ankles, cool against skin warmed by long sunlight. From the road beyond the low wall a bicycle bell chimed twice, followed by a brief kerfuffle of gulls startled into flight. Water seeped toward the rake-head, so she waded after the bucket, lifted it clear, and carried it back to the shed. Giselle’s voice drifted from the doorway, "Lost your helper?" Clara answered only with a short laugh that blew salt spray from her lip.
By the time she stepped back onto the pan, the sun had inched westward, and the shallow water glimmered a softer silver. Crystals that had been damp now rang under her boot heel, brittle as crushed sugar. She reached for the rake, halted, and shifted her grip twice, sensing the changed weight of the blade. The cord that joined plank to rake hung looser than before, its fibers no longer taut but curling softly where drying salt had tightened them earlier. She tapped the plank with the rake handle; brine failed to plunge, only a few droplets escaping like reluctant beads. Something in the balance between tension and flow had changed while she chased that wandering bucket.
Thinking of the earlier click, she crouched at the channel edge and scraped a line of silt away, revealing a narrow groove beneath the plank. Sun-bleached wood had worn a tiny recess. Fresh crystals built a ledge, launching the plank each time the cord tightened. When the ledge dried fully, the plank refused to move. She dipped her palm into the cool channel, splashed the ledge, and watched the salt dissolve back into clouded water. A soft creak followed, the plank tilting again, brine slipping through like someone just cracked a hidden door. She rose, grip steady now, and drew the rake along the glistening crust while evening air brushed her cheeks with cooling damp.
