Twig Set at the Thawing Pond Edge-

English 原文
Reese stepped over the low stone stile at the meadow’s edge and followed the damp ribbon of path toward the thawing pond. Each stride beat against the ground like a quiet metronome, matching the distant drip where ice surrendered to hiding water. Near the bank, two rust-chewed iron brackets jutted from a granite block, their empty mouths exposing a space where planks no longer sat. Wind slipped through that gap, stroking the back of Reese’s knuckles with chilled air. He set his backpack down on a patch of verdant moss, the fabric darkening as meltwater crept upward in slow pulses, then knelt to study the retreating white circle in the centre of the pond.
The surface talked in intervals—trickle, pause, faint crack, longer pause—until a small channel released a cluster of trapped bubbles in rhythmic bursts. Reese reached for a flat stone, then stopped halfway, fingers hovering; the waterline had crept farther overnight, and a tossed stone might snap the fragile cadence. Instead, he traced the edge where liquid met grainy ice, noticing the terrain of miniature ridges left by yesterday’s sun. A tilted metal plaque, part of a project celebrating local cultural heritage, rested crooked among reeds; its screws hung loose, no panel behind it now, only shadow. The plaque shivered with each new drip, as though practicing patience beside the resilient ice.
Reese straightened, rolled his shoulders, and murmured, “Still counting,” the words sliding away on the breeze without seeking reply. A birch branch overhead dipped on every fourth gust, its tip touching open water, setting rings that journeyed toward the shrinking ice like silent seconds on a clock face. On impulse, Reese snapped a thin twig from a fallen bough and planted it upright in the mud directly beneath the branch. The twig quivered between beats, marking the day’s line while the gap on the granite block remained unspoken and wide.
Sunlight strengthened, quickening the tempo of melt, and the smell of thawing mud thickened around the shore. Reese shifted his weight, testing the softness underfoot; mud swallowed the edges of his boots in a slow pulse, then released them with a quiet suck. He stepped back toward the stile, though his attention lingered on the twig and on the brackets that framed open air. A bright film draped the twig’s bark, pearls gathering, sliding, then waiting. One by one, the tiny droplets along the twig’s bark began to evaporate beneath the climbing noon. Their departure stayed too gradual for any quick glance, yet as certain as the pond’s next soft crack, still somewhere inside the measure.
