Three hours earlier, in the school workshop, Daphne slid a cardboard square beneath a wooden beam, marking clearance with a stub of chalk. Jonas held the beam level, watching the gap between edge and floor narrow, widen, then settle; the oscillation of light underneath told him which brace stayed true and which sagged. Off to the side, a miniature crane they had built from tongue-depressors sat unfinished, its cable dangling above the table’s varnished surface. A draft from the open window nudged the cable, and the claw’s paper fingers tapped the tabletop, leaving a dot of graphite where Daphne had tested balance the day before.

Back at the arcade, Jonas eases the joystick left until the claw’s shadow aligns with the glass smear, then stops. The trolley answers with a brief shudder, the wheels kissing the rail’s end-stop; metal meets metal, and a crisp click crosses the enclosed air. He raises a finger toward the drop button, pauses, lowers it again, and instead nudges the stick forward just enough for the shadow to slip beyond the smear’s final bend. The ridge below seems steeper from this angle; the quokka now rests beneath the claw’s rim rather than its center, and the slight adjustment recalls the workshop gap that refused to square no matter how tightly the beam was clamped.

He sets the joystick back into its neutral slot, hands falling to his sides, and watches without another move as the cable unspools of its own accord, gravity owning the descent. The claw touches fabric, closes, rises; the plush tilts, slides, slips free, and settles against the ridge once more. The pastel LEDs continue their slow oscillation across the glass.
