Waverly’s Morning Sketch Beside the Dew-Laden Web-

English 原文
No birdcall stirred the damp yard when Waverly knelt beside the web stretched between oak limb and cedar post. The air held an overnight chill that slipped through his sleeves, yet the silk glittered with bead after bead of captured warmth. He wanted a clean sketch for class, something that showed how the spiral sharpened toward the hub like a living fractal. Cold cramped his fingers, and the pencil skated across the damp sheet, smudging graphite into blurry moons. He steadied one radial line with a fingernail, testing its spring, and the droplet chain quivered but never broke. Another attempt left a darker smear across the page, and he drew back, shoulders tight, breath clouding above the paper.
Sketchbook drooping at his side, he straightened and let his palm rest against the cedar post. Years of slow maturation had hardened the wood while rain had warped its surface into shallow waves that trapped pockets of cool air. A gate somewhere behind him creaked, and Cruz, the caretaker, walked up the path with a tin kettle. “Morning’s cooler than it looks,” Cruz said, letting steam ribbon from the kettle’s narrow spout. Waverly only nodded, lifted the watering can left near the hedge, and followed Cruz toward the beds of mint. Metal met water with a dull clank; icy splashes licked his boots while the sun pressed a gentle blaze against his neck.
A droplet skittered down the can’s curved side, tracing a line that parted into smaller beads before reuniting. The accidental map echoed the silk geometry he had struggled to catch. The resemblance looked plausible, more instruction than coincidence, and he paused mid-pour; water continued to run, pooling around a clump of soil. In that stillness he pictured the nocturnal architect easing thread after thread outward, measuring distance by touch, trusting tension and dew to reveal flaws. His wrist copied the motion, circling once above the mint, and a cleaner pattern hovered, unasked, at the edge of his vision.
He set the can aside on the gravel edge and walked back to the cedar post. From the new angle the web no longer blazed; side light turned most strands invisible, leaving gaps where jewels had already evaporated. The missing sparkle cleared a path for shape, and the once-confusing spirals lay plain against the hedge’s darker leaves. Pencil met paper again, moving in the same gentle circle his wrist had rehearsed above the mint. Ink would come later, perhaps after the sun finished lifting the dew; for now, line after line grew across the page while the web warmed behind it. At the centre, a single bead lingered, swelling under rising heat, uncertain whether to cling or drop.
