English 原文
Viola pulled the blunt stylus through dark wax as a sparrow dropped to the window ledge. Wax curled like tiny ribbons from the line, and bright copper flashed where her path had cleared. Morning light slanted off the glass, turning the bird into a small silhouette that pecked and hopped. Beyond the pane, two iron braziers sat cold in the courtyard, their bowls dusted pale with last winter's ash. A smooth chip of flint held a wavering corner of damp paper near the press, just heavy enough to pin it. She leaned closer; the wax smelled warm and resinous, the copper plate pooled a dim amber under her hand.
Her hand kept moving; the quick stops and bursts became smaller marks than the vase she had begun. She shifted the stylus to its flat edge and let tiny dots stagger across the wax—left, right, left. Idris glanced over from the sink and said, "Here," and his palms lifted the plate toward the glass screen. She trailed after him, palm shading her eyes as glare scattered across the pane and the workshop brightened. Behind the screen, exposed copper darkened in thin lanes while coated areas stayed dim, a slow map formed. In the courtyard, the braziers' ash showed faint grooves, a harrowed bowl where last season's rake had passed. "Ready?" Idris asked when the deepening paused; she answered, "Yes," and he set the rinsed plate on towels.
Back at the bench, she rolled ink until the tacky peel of each pass made a small sound against copper. She pressed the cloth across the flat, leaving ink in the channels, and the surface cleared to a soft glare. The damp paper felt cool on her forearm as she laid it down, its weight more tactile than its thin look. She turned the crank; resistance swelled, steadied, then eased, and her boots read the floor through each shift in weight. Out on the sill, the sparrow prodded a dry leaf, hopped to a brazier's rim, and vanished inside the bowl's shadow. Her hand hovered above the handle for a beat, then returned to the wheel rather than lifting the blankets early.
She let the handle rest and set the damp print on felt, corners still buckled from water. When she peeled the paper, mirror-hops rose sharp in ink, and stray dots gathered into a path between two dark circles. Those circles read now as braziers, not ponds, and the field of specks curved like rows in a harrowed bed. She stayed beside the bench, inked plate cooling to dull copper on the wood. On the ledge, the sparrow slid along the rim and dipped out of sight into the bowl again.
