An unused stool rested near the bench, its cushion slightly flattened, the impression now slowly rising; a pair of gloves lay beside it, fingers half-curled as though waiting for a hand.

He leaned forward, letting the furnace’s pressing warmth reach his ribs, then gathered a molten bloom the size of an orange. Halfway through the next rotation, his gaze slipped toward the empty pipe cradle and his tempo faltered. The gather sagged, its lower edge threatening to thicken beyond saving, and a ribbon of glass cooled into a dull stripe. Barrett braced his elbows, returned the piece to the glory hole, and waited for color to brighten again; the delay tightened every muscle along his spine. Behind him two visitors murmured, a quiet dispute about whether the cooling shelf held vases or bowls, their words low enough not to intrude yet sharp enough to mark the silence he circled. When the glass softened, he drew it out, kissed the surface with a wet wooden block, and eased a shallow fold where a curve had been.

The finished form, a wide-mouthed bowl, rang once against the annealer’s shelf, the clear tone answering nothing. Barrett tilted the blowpipe free, rested it in the lonely cradle, and wiped his palms on his apron. Outside, the bell struck the hour again, duller now, as though the walls had grown thicker. He stepped toward the cooling rack, knees bending to absorb the floor’s faint tremor, and his right hand hovered above the next unused pipe handle, waiting for weight.
