English 原文
Water slapped harder against the left concrete wall, then softened, as the log-shaped boat glided from open glare into painted shadow. A faint scrape scored the steel guide rail beside Emil’s knee, an ordinary scar he had always let blur. Zinnia sat ahead of him, palm trailing in the current; the mist cooled their forearms and carried a hint of chlorine over popcorn drifting from the midway. Pumps beneath the channel pulsed in measured surges, rocking the hull in short, pendulum motions. Their boat drifted without hurry, surrendering to that rhythm, and the painted ceiling began to lower into dusk-blue darkness speckled with pinprick lights.
At eye level, a mural stretched along the tunnel: marshland at midsummer, reeds bending toward a watercolor horizon, and a poised heron frozen in its hunt. Each surge of water nudged the beak forward by a fraction, an illusion created by the boat’s unhurried drift. Emil leaned left to balance the slight yaw, trying to compensate for the hull’s shallow scrape against the rail. Ahead, Zinnia straightened; her shoulders lifted when she noticed a park worker wade knee-deep along a service walkway beyond a mesh door. A hose coiled at his feet beside a dilapidated ladder whose paint peeled in narrow curls. The worker’s motions matched the pump cycle, pausing whenever the channel calmed and restarting with the next deliberate surge.
Another scrape echoed—longer this time—and Zinnia’s hand lifted from the water as her shoulders pulled inward. “Did you hear that?” she murmured, her words almost lost beneath the tunnel’s hum and the muted roar of distant rides. Emil offered a shrug and replied that the rail often complained, yet his fingers tightened around the rim before loosening again. The heron slid past her shoulder once more; under the dim spotlight its once-sharp eye looked clouded, and a fleck of paint had chipped from the beak. He shifted his weight backward to compensate for the drift, yet the thin whispering scrape returned, skating along the guide rail despite his effort. Mist settled on Zinnia’s sleeve, and she brushed it away in a slow, unfinished arc, pausing halfway as though expecting the wall itself to move.
Daylight cracked the tunnel mouth, and the bow tipped along the descent; water raced upward in twin sheets that glittered briefly before collapsing around the hull. The impact blossomed into a fan of droplets that cooled their faces, then the boat rocked once and drifted into the calm run-out. Popcorn scent floated over the water again, lighter than before, and the pumps settled into a quieter rhythm beneath the fiberglass shell. Zinnia turned, eyes following the concrete wall where the earlier slap had sounded; along the scrape, a fresh green streak glimmered, wet against the otherwise dull gray. The boat slid beneath the observation bridge, water flattening behind it, while that narrow ribbon of color receded into shadow and the next pulse of ripples.
