English 原文
The pitch of the water’s murmuring sharpened as Greer eased the iron handle upward. Her fingers pressed the cool, slime-slick metal with practiced steadiness, the tendons shifting easily beneath sun-browned skin. She expected the familiar division of flow: a bright sheet sliding left toward lettuce beds, a gentler ribbon settling right toward the beans. Within the stone matrix lining the channel, each gate supposedly behaved like an obedient hinge, pivoting and parceling water one measured notch at a time. Greer released her grip, listening for the drop in volume that signalled balance again. Beyond the path, young shoots already lifted their blunt tips, relying on that predictable sharing of water.
Instead, the current downstream thinned; its glassy surface diminished until sunlit pebbles winked through like scattered coins. A loose mat of leaves floated above the sluice, threatening to transmit every eddy straight back to her ankles as a shiver. Greer bent, flicked the leaves aside, and waited, but the channel only whispered louder, refusing the even tone she anticipated. "Flow seems stubborn today," she said, half to the frog perched on a damp stone. No reply came except a soft plop when the frog slipped beneath the surface. The pattern of ripples below the gate fractured, spreading erratic spirals that tugged tiny bubbles sideways.
She pictured a hypothetical tangle beneath the waterline: perhaps silt clutched a root, or a gate downstream hung crooked after last night’s cooling air. Walking the dry path, she spotted Idris adjusting a distant gate; his silhouette rose, turned, and dropped again, and the sound around her shifted once more. Greer paused, palm hovering over a spare flat stone; her earlier understanding of cause and effect unraveled like twine in wet hands. She wedged the stone anyway, felt the current press against it, and stepped back without waiting for a verdict. "Water's shifting again," Idris called, his voice thinning across the wide barley field before fading beneath the breeze. Water fanned over the parched soil beyond the beans, darkening earth in an irregular spread that neither of them predicted.
Back at the gate, Greer wrapped her knuckles around the handle once more, firmly. A fresh drop of rust-brown water clung to its lower edge, catching morning light that earlier glared past her notice. The channel murmured, uneven yet steady enough for now, while that single drop lengthened, quivered, and finally fell into the moving sheet below. Greer watched the ripple widen and fade, the handle cooling again against her settling fingers. She neither closed the gate nor lifted it higher; instead, she held still, letting uncertainties circulate like the water around her boots. Somewhere downstream a frog croaked, and the sound returned in fragments, as though the channel itself tried and abandoned explanation.
