English 原文
Below the rippling surface, a burbling hush pressed against Etta’s calves, while above the waterline the gravel bar kept a dry cricket-bright stillness. She edged a flat slate toward the half-built tower; water squeezed out from beneath, and the sudden alignment of weight and grit clicked audibly before the resonance faded. That crisp note traveled through her fingertips, a muted appreciation of how hidden channels inside the stone emptied themselves in an instant. She inhaled, held, and after deliberation rested another slab on the stack, testing for wobble with the back of one nail.
A gust that smelled of wet reeds crossed the bend, an uninvited intervention that pushed the slender column just past its comfort. Slate, granite, and river-quartz rattled down in a curt clatter, splashing her ankles and startling a frog under the bank. "That stack disagrees with you," Trent called from the willow shadow, his voice skimming the water like a skipping stone. Etta crouched, lifted one stone, then another, yet the fine grit still coating their faces denied clean contact however gently she pressed. After a moment of consideration her shoulders settled, and she placed the stones aside in a shallow pool rather than rebuilding at once.
She wandered upstream, palm trailing across the tops of supple watercress until stems crackled softly and bright scent clouded the air between her and the river. Shallow pockets among the gravel breathed with each pulse of current, releasing a hush that echoed the earlier click in slower, rounder syllables. While rinsing the greens, her thumb traced a groove on a pebble, and the rhythm of water slipping away met the memory still lodged in her skin. She froze mid-swirl, then straightened, pebble dripping in one hand, tower half-ruined behind her, river singing the same low idea in a different key.
She stepped back onto the gravel bar, feeling gravel shift underfoot and sunlight return to the backs of her hands. She lifted a broad granite disc, dipped it once, and set the wet underside against the waiting slab that had stayed upright. This time no click marked alignment; instead a muted grip held the pieces together, silence weighing more than sound. A gentle creak passed down through every stone, like a muffled chord struck inside a closed piano, then faded into the river’s continuous murmur. She hovered, unsure whether to continue or pause, and her thumb tapped twice on the granite before she inhaled. Trent whistled, low and surprised, his shadow stretching beside the willow while he stayed rooted a pace above the water. Etta did not answer; her knuckles rested on the upper stone, feeling for the faint tremor that never came. She lowered another slate, and the river’s hush slipped around the steadied column in a calmer rhythm.
