English 原文
No drip sounded from the overhead pipe when Remy stepped onto the stone flags, and the stillness pressed against his shoulders like an unspoken question. Warm air filled the glasshouse, dense and damp; leaves hung motionless, their edges beginning to curl. He shifted his weight forward, ankles working to keep balance on the gritty floor, and glanced at the ridge vent high above. The crank rod rested at an awkward angle under the rafters, its gear teeth stalled halfway across their course. Seedlings below sat in sour humidity that had lingered since dawn, their stems bowed under faint droplets. He braced both feet, the central goal buzzing in his limbs: tilt the handle, lift the vent, let a breath of cooler air flow across the beds.
Turning the handle alone proved useless; metal clicked yet refused true alignment, and the strain crept along his backbone until joints in his spine protested. Thea, trimming basil nearby, caught the scrape of boots and turned with raised eyebrows. “The ridge rod sticks again,” Remy muttered, shifting weight from heel to heel while moist heat wrapped his shirt. She placed her shears on the bench and offered a pine wedge, smooth from yesterday’s quiet carpentry meant for pot stands. He slid the wedge beside the housing, knuckles whitening, then leaned with knees bent; the wood acted as a lever, spreading pressure where the metal tolerated none. A muted groan echoed through the frame, and the vent jerked a few centimeters upward.
Fresh, drier air spilled inside, and leaves in the hanging baskets shivered in unison, a soft riffle that loosened specks of dust from their veins. The small triumph dissolved when the opening shifted the balance of a pot; water, pooled in its saucer, tipped forward and splashed over the wooden bench. Wet grain swelled, the plank bent, and three seed trays skated toward the edge with a slow, dreadful scrape. Remy lunged, center of gravity low, catching the nearest tray just before its lip cleared the timber. Soaking water ran across the flags, darkening grit that now threatened his footing with each hurried step. The first solution had tilted into a second problem, and neither tray nor vent looked ready to surrender ground.
He steadied the trays against his elbow, then paused, chest rising as he recalibrated weight between both soles. A half-turn backward on the crank lowered the vent enough to calm the draft, while humidity crept upward unseen, fogging the nearest pane in a thin blur. He knelt, slid the same pine wedge beneath the sagging bench leg, and felt the structure settle into firm alignment. Thea wiped damp palms on her trousers and murmured, “Close enough,” offering neither praise nor complaint. Beyond them, the drip regained its measured persistence, and a slim ribbon of cool air lingered against the back of Remy’s neck.
