The Heat Behind the Glass-

English 原文
Fern dragged a wooden crate across the steamy flagstones, climbed onto it, and reached for the roof vent lever. Hardly had she braced her boots against a bench when the metal resisted, warm condensation dripping onto her knuckles. Rarely had the glasshouse held such thick air; every pane sweated, every leaf shone. A line of nocturnal lamps along the rafters burned dull orange, keeping night-blooming cacti awake despite the late hour. What puzzled her was the unwavering reading of twenty-four degrees on the wall thermometer, even as moisture clung to her collar like soup broth.
Gloves forgotten, she pressed her palm to the glass. If the gauge were accurate, the surface would have felt cooler. Instead it throbbed with trapped heat. A shuffle near the compost bags drew her gaze: a small rabbit squeezed from a warren hidden beneath broken bricks, nose twitching in the humid haze. The animal paused, then shot into a sprint that sent dry soil scattering across the floor. Fern stepped back, surprised at the visitor’s boldness; in that hesitation, the lever slipped from her damp grip and clanged against the frame, unresolved.
Footsteps entered through the service door, and Jude appeared, a field researcher whose water bottle carried a peeling sticker of a galloping mustang. His sleeves were rolled high, arms flushed from the outside chill. “The data logger keeps insisting nothing’s wrong,” he said, lifting the device for her to see. Only when the rabbit darted between them did he notice the scattered dirt. Together they knelt, tracing the animal’s narrow tunnel until they found the temperature probe buried under an overturned tray, insulated by loam. The steady reading, once a comfort, now revealed itself as an error masked by the rabbit’s borrowed shelter. Jude lifted the probe free while Fern hauled the tray aside, soil sliding in slow clumps.
No sooner had fresh air brushed their faces than a gentle draught rolled through the opened vent, beads of condensation shrinking along the pane. The rabbit vanished outside, leaving a dark gap under the bricks. Fern exhaled, thinking the balance finally restored, yet her elbow nudged the seed shelf during that small relief. Several pots tipped, and rare seedlings spilled onto the glossy stones, roots exposed to the cooling current. She kneeled again, silent, as water from a loosened hose crept toward the fragile stems and pooled around her boots.
