Above, the sky burned cobalt yet the breeze carried a shy chill, an odd pairing that pricked the skin beneath her rolled sleeves. She paused, lifted a slim wooden dowel capped by a glass ornament, and squinted at its previous shadow line already half buried.

Nadine pressed the dowel into the compacted crest, to leave a daily marker of the dune’s slow migration. The packed grains surrendered at once, and the rod leaned toward the slip face, tracing a wavering V in the air. A gentle surge of warmer wind climbed the slope and smoothed her earlier footprints as though erasing a slate. From lower down came Clara’s voice: “Still tilting?” The younger girl climbed, her perceptive fingers skimming ridge patterns without deepening them. Beside Nadine, she watched the dowel slump again while yesterday’s ant trail lay baffled below, its neat line broken into curls by incessant sliding.

Clara knelt on the windward side, scooped a double handful of gritty sun-hot sand, and packed it around the base. The dowel straightened, yet the fresh mound slumped, grains cascading over the edge where the slip face fell away like dry syrup. Nadine hesitated, then uncapped her water flask and poured a thin ribbon onto the mound. Steam did not rise, yet a darker patch spread, cooling instantly under her wrist. The damp crust held the rod, but the water trickled past and carved a narrow channel that nudged lighter powder downslope, triggering a tiny landslide that swallowed half the ornament’s shadow. “We fixed one thing and ruined the ground for measuring,” Clara muttered, tipping her hat brim lower against the reflective heat.

Nadine brushed the ornament clean, planted her feet wider, and tapped the dowel until it found an uneasy balance between moist ring and dry collar. Together they drew a shallow circle with a twig to mark the starting edge, accepting its likely disappearance. Wind whispered, indifferent, while temperature toggled between the furnace of the slope and the cool hush just beyond the ridge, each toggle lifting or settling a few restless grains. Below, their water imprint darkened, then began to fade as the surface dried. The stick stood for now, slight tilt intact; around its base, sand continued to creep in silent increments, and nobody could say where its shadow would fall by late afternoon.
