English 原文
Rhea’s fingers touched a warm oval on the shuttle handle, a ghostly print where another hand had rested and lifted away. Dust clung around the shape, finer at the center, thicker toward the edge, as though the vanished palm had pressed hardest near the thumb. Above her, dull afternoon light filtered through the tall cabinet, turning each punch card into a small midnight sky; holes blazed like pinprick stars, solid paper stayed dark as unlit towns. A single card hung crooked in the chain, its lower corner bent, the warp cords beneath it still slightly swaying. Jarvis stood at the other side of the loom, examining the cloth already wound on the beam, silent except for a measured breath that rose and fell with the fabric’s rhythm.
The ratchet snapped forward, and the crooked card slipped into the reading head with a muffled, frustrated clack; several hooks hesitated, uncertain whether to pass or stop. Amber haze from the window slanted across the rows just woven, revealing a faint diagonal ripple where balance between lifted and lowered threads had shifted. “Strange line there,” Jarvis murmured, eyes narrowing at the glimmering fault that ran across the tiny landscape emerging on the cloth. Rhea fed the next card, yet the ripple elongated, conveying a question neither blueprint nor memory answered. She paused, one hand hovering above the beater, posture still as the suspended shuttle between sheds.
A second glance at the blueprint pinned on the wall showed no diagonal stroke—only the gentle curve of a swan’s neck meant to rise later in the pattern. Rhea lifted the crooked card toward the light; its bent corner misaligned two holes, letting unexpected hooks pierce through. The mistake—once merely a smudge in the weave—now traced the beginning of that very neck ahead of schedule, as if the loom had skipped pages to whisper its image early. She considered straightening the card, then let it remain skewed, a micro-decision that would braid serendipity into every future row. Around her, the cabinet’s wood vibrated with small, steady pulses, yet the thread she watched carried a new calm tension, taut but not trembling.
The chain advanced again; the mispunched constellation joined the next perforated sheet, and the diagonal thickened into a recognizable silhouette gliding across nascent water. Rhea whispered nothing, simply guided the shuttle through the fresh shed while dusk cooled the floorboards. Outside, wind gathered; the first ripple of evening air slipped through the open window and fluttered the loose tail of weft below the beam. Rhea lowered her hand, letting the moving shadow slide across the unfinished swan.
