Wax Fragment and the Unplanned Border-

English 原文
From the doorway, Quinn watched Basil lower a brass stamp onto stretched cotton, the tool's mass flattening the fabric with a quiet thud.
Fine cracks traced the dried wax flakes scattered around his shoes, marks that told how many mornings the same rhythm had echoed across the stone.
A breeze slid through opposite windows and tugged at hanging cloth, yet the stamped borders stayed immovable, anchored by cooling wax.
Quinn lingered, shoulders leaning against the frame, measuring each careful press before stepping forward.
Brass blocks waited in a neat row beside Basil, their weight enough to impress any design yet heavy enough to bruise a careless wrist.
When his turn arrived, Quinn balanced the cold block between both palms and felt its heft bow his wrists downward.
He aimed for a straight edge, lowered the stamp, and held the pressure five slow counts.
On lifting, he found the wax had oozed beyond the carved lines, a puddled blur rather than the crisp motif Basil had coaxed earlier.
"Clean edge is tricky today," Basil said, examining the blurred wax without touching it.
He tried again beside it, adjusting grip, but the same spread appeared and a thin rim of cloth bunched beneath the brass.
The repeated misalignment gathered near his elbow like a silent vexation no brush could sweep away.
His thumb hovered above the next block, then withdrew.
He set the stamp aside, crossed the room, and picked up a broom that leaned against a crate of dye plants.
Loose cotton threads, wax crumbs, and a knocked-over glass bottle rolled underfoot; the bottle had once stored a mild citrus-oil pesticide used for friendly pest control among hanging cloth.
Quinn steadied the bottle against the wall, noticing its surprising lightness now that every drop was gone.
With slow strokes he gathered debris into a pile, hearing wax shards clack together while the broom bristles rasped over stone.
Outside the open door, leaves from last season’s indigo heap continued to decompose, giving the air a damp, earthy sweetness that drifted inward.
A curl of wax slid down the broom’s straw and landed on his palm; its narrow fissures mirrored the blurred edges on the cloth he had stamped.
He tilted the fragment toward the light, and tiny threads of brightness threaded each groove like waterlines on a river map.
Across the room a test piece, dyed earlier without ceremony, hung dripping, indigo droplets striking the basin in steady succession.
Within those droplets, the accidental rivers that had kept his grip tense now traced lively borders around the intended forms, turning the mistake into something agile and breathing.
Quinn rested the broom against the table leg and stayed motionless while dyed water kept pattering into the trough, a metronome indifferent to his pause.
