Flick of Light Through Clouded Amber-

English 原文
No scrape came from the coarse sheet; Kit held the thumb-sized amber against the lamp, hunting the insect sealed inside. Every pass he had tried left new scratches that drifted across the tiny wing like a clouded veil. He swapped to finer grit, pressed lightly, and watched the surface bloom, then dull, then bloom again, each change refusing to stay. Juliet leaned from the far bench and murmured, "Stubborn piece today, eh, Kit? Hard to please." Outside, the stormy air still carried the iron smell left by an earlier cloudburst. Kit rubbed a thumb across the cold resin and frowned at the blurred arch within.
He tried to realign the angle, tilting the lump toward the lamp so that the glare skimmed the surface instead of glaring back. Nothing opened; the wing remained half hidden behind milky swirls that caught and scattered the light. With a quick exhale, he set the amber on its cork pad and reached for the watering can beneath the window archway. The basil pots near the sill drooped after the dry heat of the lamp, and tending them felt simpler than warring with resin. Water trickled over dark soil, lifting a smell of sweet rot that mingled with pine and wax. Juliet hummed along with the neighbor’s faint radio, her palms moving through their own quiet circuit of sorting rasp-sized grit papers.
As the soil drank, Kit swirled the can in a slow half circle, wrist snapping at the finish the way he once skimmed flat pebbles along water. The forgotten motion slid from shoulder to fingertips before intention caught up this afternoon. A silver drop arced from the spout, caught the slanting light, and froze midair like a tiny sphere of glass. That compact flick might rejuvenate the resin—less weight, more speed, ending in a small flourish that lifted away instead of dragging. He eased back to the bench, but his hand hesitated above the amber as if the new idea preferred silence a moment longer.
Kit wiped moisture from his palms on the linen apron, stepped toward the doorway, and paused just long enough to glance once at the waiting lump. He slipped beneath the brick archway and let the curtain settle behind him, leaving the workbench in quiet amber glow. Tiny scratches crossed the resin like pale rivers, yet a single cleared pane caught the lamp and flung a bright rectangle across the cork pad. Beside it, the unused fine grit sheets lay fanned out, edges curling slightly where water had kissed the paper. The room held the mingled perfume of pine resin and fresh soil, hovering above the silent lamp.
