English 原文
Sawyer paused at the wide wooden table, palms hovering above a brush whose handle still carried another hand’s warmth. Beside it the inkstone well shone mirror-black, yet the rim was dusted with dry soot, a quiet record of unfinished grinding. A brass sextant, its arc dulled to matte brown, anchored a corner of thin practice paper that curled toward the window. Farther along the sill, a toy lighthouse in chipped red paint leaned slightly, as though waiting for a tide that never reached indoors. On a tray, a small cup steamed, its pale broth holding a single parsley sprig, more garnish than flavor.
Sawyer lifted the ceramic water dropper, aiming to coax the ink toward a smoke-grey he pictured on the untouched sheet. One drop fell; the surface swallowed it, leaving no ripple, no change in gleam. Ruby, arranging brushes opposite him, glanced up. “Still darker than night,” she murmured, then leaned back to give space. Sawyer added another drop, then another; both disappeared like ink into ink, and the well kept its lacquer shine. Time stretched; the scent of pine soot thickened while outside a gull’s cry crossed the window but failed to enter. He shifted weight from one foot to the other, uncertain whether patience or force would lighten the pool.
On the ninth drop, Sawyer hesitated, wrist hovering as the studio’s quiet crowded his ears. He released it at last; the bead landed, lingered as a domed silver eye, then burst, sending pale threads swirling through the blackness. A thin tongue of diluted ink crept over the rim and darkened the grain of the table. Sawyer deftly pressed a folded linen blotter against the overflow, fingers tightening until the cloth drank the runaway stain. Ruby’s chair scraped; she pushed a wooden wedge toward him, nothing said, the gesture as light as the scratch of her sleeve. He took it, slid it under the inkstone to lift one edge, granting the stream a path back into the well.
Sawyer set the blotter aside and rested both palms flat on the tabletop again. He let the muscles along his forearms tighten once, then soften, leaving the wedge to hold the stone without further help. Across from him, Ruby lifted her brush, but instead of writing she watched the gradient bloom widen inside the well. Ink on her previous strokes darkened at the edges while the centres paled, mirroring the slow turn in the pool between them. Sawyer exhaled, hearing the breath leave like a faint breeze through reeds. Beyond the open window the curtain stirred, and the diluted ring kept spreading, silent as evening light sliding over the wooden floorboards.
