English 原文
A pale oval had already appeared near the corner of the lemon-green sheet—someone’s fingertip, or a stray droplet? Nina bent closer, tongue catching a faint metallic tang rising from the coated paper, certain she could still earn a clean print. Grey’s measured gait crossed behind her toward the glass stack, soles tapping the concrete like a metronome she had learned to trust. He slid a pane toward her, the edge tasting of dust when she bit a lip in concentration. She clicked a wooden clip open and shut to flick away grit, the gesture brisk and certain. "Exposure starts counting the moment we step outside," he offered, but Nina already aligned a feather, fern, and a maple key in what she believed perfect balance. The table’s chalky dryness pressed back against her palms; nothing, she thought, could upset this arrangement.
As she lowered the glass, a soft breeze lifted the maple key, tilting it off its axis. Nina paused, breath sharp, then nudged the stalk until its veins lay flat again. A ripened sweetness drifted from the nearby tray of grass seeds, mixing oddly with the iron taste still on her tongue, and her earlier certainty thinned. The lemon-green border, intrigued by the sudden brightness, slipped toward olive before she reached the door. She quickened her pace, yet grey-blue crept inward faster than her count of seconds. Grey waited outside with a quizzical expression, shading his eyes; the quiet between them thickened, and her arithmetic faltered.
Halfway through the eight-minute measure, a flying seagull sliced across the sunlit rectangle. Its wings threw a swift shadow that swallowed the feather’s outline and lengthened the fern’s stem. The paper lay fascinated beneath that brief eclipse, colours pausing between grey-blue and dark-blue-grey as if tasting the bird’s passage. Nina’s confidence, brittle now, cracked again; she lifted the frame, tilted it, then set it back, letting uncertainty write alongside light. Water waited in the enamel tray, briny when she dipped a finger to test it, and she hesitated, listening to a single gutter drip echo inside her ribs.
At last she eased the sheet into the water. Yellow dissolved in swirling ribbons, and deep Prussian blue bloomed with a bittersweet aftertaste at the back of her throat. Patches born from the seagull’s shadow settled as pale ghosts, neither mistake nor triumph, simply present. Grey handed a wooden clip. Earlier she had snapped it shut. Now her fingers moved slower, letting the spring bite gently before she hung the dripping print on the line, a quiet tap of water striking the floorboards beneath.
