English 原文
A long, uneven creak rippled along the sun-print bench as Shea eased the wooden frame toward the south-facing pane. Beside the frame, a folded apron lay untouched, its straps hanging over the edge like quiet rope. The neighboring stool remained pushed back, guarding a pale rectangle on the floorboards where weight no longer pressed. Above, the ventilation duct let out a low hum, paused, and gathered itself again. A brass egg-timer contraption tapped inside its dome, quicker than the hum yet slower than her pulse. She set the lemon-green sheet in place, its coating smooth as wet stone, and the creak faded into a hush too thin to measure.
Pressed ferns, a feather, and a strand of dried grass waited in their tray. Shea lowered each onto the coated paper, reading the angles the way hands read quiet knowledge that never reaches the tongue. She almost tried to verbalize something—then sealed the thought under glass. The feather’s spine lifted when air shifted, so she leaned forward, adjusted its quill two finger-widths, and felt the bench sigh beneath her elbows. Outside, traffic murmured beyond the window; inside, the timer’s tick answered every passing wheel.
A sudden clang startled the room: a sparrow thudded against the glass, wings drumming before it veered skyward. The impact nudged the exposure frame enough to tilt the feather off line. “You heard that too?” Giselle spoke from the wash trays, water rippling around her sleeves. Shea exhaled, slid the glass aside, and pinched the feather back into its place. Sunlight had already begun to transform the coating—the edges nearest the frame showed a lean into olive, while shadowed centers still held their first lemon tone. She glanced at the timer: sand continued its steady fall, unbothered by birds or startled hands.
When the final grains vanished, she carried the frame to the rinse. Water received the paper with a soft splash, and unreacted yellow rolled away in cloudy ribbons. The bench behind her kept its empty stool, the folded apron still draped like a wordless bequest. Blue deepened along the print while droplets tapped the metal tray’s rim. Shea lifted the dripping sheet, let excess water streak downward, and tapped the timer’s glass just as before; this time the tap rang against a room filled with slow echo and the sharp scent of iron-wet paper.
