English 原文
Thea twirled the paper cone above the spinning drum, wrists loose, every circle matching the motor’s steady hum she long ago counted instinctively. A zestful organ tune leaked from a distant speaker, its jaunty notes bouncing between the striped poles and laying a bright rhythm over the mechanical whirr. She kept her gaze on the vaporous floss already budding, certain the forthcoming cloud would swell exactly as hundreds had before. Nothing in the night sky, neither the breeze nor the fading daylight, had ever unsettled the muscle-taught rhythm in her hands. Thin, sinuous wisps already reached for her sleeve, and she brushed them aside with the same quick flick she used every summer evening.
Mid-turn, the hum shifted half a tone lower, like a kettle settling after a first boil. Thea’s wrist paused, the cone hovering over the basin while uneven threads sketched jagged white strokes instead of the familiar spiral. Inside the rim, she spotted a faint ring of dull metal where bright chrome had rubbed away, a scar she had never noticed. A child’s voice piped, “Is it ready?” then fell silent when the floss thinned rather than blooming. Thea rotated again, slower, listening; the altered pitch lingered, raspier, as though the worn circle scraped the air itself. Behind her, the organ tune kept its zestful bounce, now oddly out of step with the drum’s new growl.
She scooped fresh sugar from a squat tin, tapped the edge, and fed the granules in small pulses, hoping to coax the drum back to its earlier song. Instead, a gust from the fairground corridor stole across the counter; loosened filaments drifted sideways, clinging to the awning pole like ghostly ivy. Threads broke before reaching the cone, leaving chalk-fine dust that glittered and vanished. Her fingers tightened, then loosened; the practiced timing crumbled. She nurtured a broader spiral, angling the cone outward to invite stray filaments back into orbit. The altered motion threw her elbow off balance, the cone bobbing once before regaining its track.
She reset the cone above the drum, abandoning the metronome in her head and borrowing the machine’s new voice instead, tracing wider, slower arcs that rose and fell with the rough hum. Layer by uneven layer, a lopsided cloud gathered, softer on one side, dense on the other, its shape admitting the flaw rather than resisting it. Arlo lifted it, blinked at its unbalanced bulk, and laughed through sugar dust that caught the lamplight like glitter. Thea touched the rim again, the scratch warm beneath a skin of syrup; little flecks of chrome shone under the bulbs. The rasping hum stayed between the notes of the organ long after the cone left her hand.
