English 原文
Neve slid the tracing paper aside, clearing a neat oval of bare wood on the worktable. On that pale bedrock lay a ruby shard, thumb-sized, its skin so smooth it tasted almost sweet where her breath passed over it. Light through the tall window retreated behind a cloud, leaving the shard as a quiet ember rather than a flame. Somewhere in the workshop an adult coughed over the soldering iron, but the shard remained still, waiting. The faint metallic tang of glass dust reached her tongue when she nudged a cobalt triangle closer to the waiting piece.
She pressed the ruby shard into a zinc came channel, listening for the soft click that confirmed its anchorage. Another shard followed, then another, each click sinking into silence as though the frame swallowed sound the way water swallows salt. Colours piled in tight rows, yet the tracing paper between them showed no change, a quirk of the craft she had started to accept. Outside, a distant bell announced teatime, its metallic ring carrying the flat aftertaste of cooled tea. Neve flexed her fingers, found the metallic dust gritty at the corner of her lip, and continued feeding glass into the waiting channels.
Piece after piece disappeared into the lattice, the panel absorbing hue after hue without offering anything back except a dull patchwork of surfaces. Neve paused, thumb resting on a cobalt edge, uncertain whether another click would matter when every earlier click had slipped beneath notice. Then the cloud outside shifted, a clean shaft of sunlight slid through the tall window, and colour erupted across the paper like juice bursting from ripe fruit. The ruby projected a scarlet pool, the cobalt a deep sea, and where they overlapped a violet streak quivered, proof that light, not glass, completed the picture. She exhaled sharply, wiped the table with the small brush, and decided to lift the half-built panel toward the window instead of adding more pieces.
Lifting the panel revealed a looseness along one joint, so she kneaded a coil of putty between finger and thumb until its salty flavor coated her palate. She pressed the grey rope into the gap, felt the framework tighten, and sensed an unspoken fellowship forming among colours that moments earlier refused to speak. A nearby voice murmured, "Bright enough," yet Neve barely tilted her head, already chasing a last seam that still gaped. Putty overflowed, curled outward like soft clay, and she flicked a single bead toward the tray. The bead spins through the sunlit air, its curved skin catching ruby, cobalt, and violet as it falls.
