English 原文
Clara rolled the inked brayer across the cherry block, the tacky rhythm cutting through the rectangle of late afternoon glare. Each stroke coated the ridges in slick midnight, yet a narrow triangle near the top stayed unexpectedly dull. She nudged the desk lamp; the peg that usually caught the light failed to sparkle, leaving the area oddly unanchored. A hush settled, broken only by a wind chime outside, while the absent glint hovered at the edge of her sight. Still, the pursuit of an even coat pressed her forward, and the roller hissed along the grain once more.
She lifted the baren fashioned from driftwood, placed it on the paper, and circled until a soft darkness bled through the fibers. Peeling one corner free, she glimpsed a faint constellation of stray dots marching beside the iris petals the block was meant to show. The image sat slightly adrift, a ridge doubled where two colours should have kissed. She exhaled, placed the sheet on the growing, slightly disheartened stack, re-inked, and tried again. A second print echoed the same skewed trail, proving the first slip no accident.
She paused, fingers resting on the cool glass slab; her gaze drifted from the dull patch on the block to the trough below. Among curled shavings lay the brass peg, its tip reflecting a shard of light that now seemed brighter than the lamp itself. She retrieved it, pressed it back into its socket, and tapped the wood until it sat level with the surface. Before rolling again she hesitated, weighing the honesty of leaving the flaw against the aim of perfect alignment. The baren resumed its slow orbit, and the paper darkened in smooth, unbroken bands.
When she peeled the new sheet, every petal met its stem, and the margin lay clean, the stray constellation erased. She clipped the print to the drying line above, where afternoon light slanted through the window and threaded the wet ink with amber. From the doorway, Paul let out a brief verdict, "Looks balanced now; the colors meet without quarrel." Clara answered with a small nod, wiping the baren’s rim and setting the driftwood disc beside the brayer. The freshly printed sheet rocked on the line, its corners lifting as the breeze carried pigment scent toward the hallway.
