The velvety black ink he usually favoured spread thin on the glass slab, catching a stripe of overhead light before swallowing it between strokes.

He had worked this cherry square often enough that his palm aligned with the ridges before looking, yet today his thumb lingered over an unexpected hollow.

He paused, listening to the faint creak of the bench and the distant clatter of drying prints against the line.

Beyond the open sash, Market Street carried a rising percussion: cart wheels rattling, paper lantern poles tapping, a single meadowlark whistling above the mounting din.

At the intersection near the square, children darted around coloured streamers, their shoes sending brief skids over cobbles that echoed through the workshop walls.

Vendors rehearsed greetings in brisk voices, clearing throats between bursts of beaming laughter that scattered like coins against pans.

"Ink smells sweeter than bread today!" a passing baker called, voice rolling under the sill before blending with drums.

All of it announced the evening festival, yet a hush clung inside the studio, stitched by that lone bird call slipping between hammer beats.

Cyrus laid a damp sheet over the inked block; the paper whispered against wood, then settled, muting everything beyond his breath.

The baren's flat circles started steady, slowed, then stopped altogether when resistance thinned sooner than expected beneath his heel.

He lifted just one corner; where a bright ring normally crowned the design, a bare patch of untouched fibres stared back, a silent omission framed by flawless lines.

The meadowlark fell silent, and for a span only the muffled thrum of inked paper travelled through Cyrus’s sleeve.

He peeled the sheet entirely.

The shifted block left a slender crescent where the missing sun once sat, turning the print into an eclipse nobody on the street would recognise.

He let it hang from the drying line beside older copies and stepped away.

The bench, earlier ordinary, held a thin glaze of velvety ink along its edge that caught the lantern’s breath with a subdued creak.

他把紙整張揭起。

移動過的木板留下纖細弧月，取代那缺失的太陽，把圖像變成街上沒人看過的日蝕。

他把新作掛在舊版旁，退後一步。

先前平常的長板凳邊緣覆著薄薄墨光，在燈火呼吸間發出壓低的吱聲。
