English 原文
Gwen lingered just outside the roasting room doorway, watching Hartley lean over the small drum while pale chaff drifted around him like slow snow. Beside the scale rested the wooden scoop whose gnarled handle curved like a weathered root, ordinary as countertop dust. She noted the steady climb of the thermometer needle and the soft rattle of raw beans tumbling in uneven circles. Through the half-open window, daybreak light touched the iron frame, and distant bicycle bells threaded faint metallic taste through cool air. Somewhere beyond the lane a tree shook loose petals; the breeze carried an aftertaste that whispered of fragrant blossoms.
Hartley straightened, wiped his palms, and nodded toward the lever; Gwen stepped in, warmth thickening across her forearms. Pops began, scattered first, then teeming so quickly the sound knitted into a crackle that tinged her tongue with faint bitterness. She tasted the shift even before colour deepened; grassy dryness melted toward caramel, and the room changed flavour with each second. A copper pipe above the drum carried exhaust upward, its collar edged by a mossy green patina that Gwen had never actually examined. Hartley murmured from the side, “Your call whenever you trust the colour,” and lifted his notebook again.
Gwen gripped the scoop, intending to weigh the batch, yet her thumb paused on the shallow polished dent. The wood there had darkened, oil and time sinking so deep that the grain shone darker than the rest of the gnarled curve. In that pause the crackle faded to isolated ticks, each pop releasing sweetness that coated her palate like burnt sugar. She studied the scoop anew; the mossy ring on its brass ferrule, the thin nick along its rim, the spot where flame had licked it long ago. What had been a simple tool now read like a ledger of every roast, each mark recording heat, care, and tiny miscalculations.
She released the drum; beans cascaded into the perforated tray, rolling over one another with a crisp rattle and bitter-sweet steam. Metal cooled their surfaces while she ladled measured scoops into a shallow porcelain bowl, mounding them into a loose, glossy hill. Steam rose above the bowl and settled against her lips with a mellow chocolate edge that lingered between breaths. A breeze slipped through the window, thin but steady, and the first warm chaff flake lifted off the mound and whirled upward. The draft grazed the bowl again, stirring the topmost bean until its sheen flashed once, then settled.
