English 原文
A faint tang of drying seaweed drifted through the open lighthouse door this morning. Under it lay a chalky smell from the keeper’s bucket, where broken shells waited for grinding. Kieran stepped onto the stone floor and rubbed one boot, clearing loose grit before walking farther. Two shallow tins sat nearby, each half-filled with different grains from the beach. He tipped the first tin gently, watching sand trickle across its dull metal. The overall weight slowed the flow, and small ridges rose along the inner rim. Nadia, busy polishing tiny glass fragments for a new lamp shade, glanced over. "Smooth line, isn’t it?" she said, her voice bouncing softly against the curved walls.
Encouraged by the sight, Kieran lifted a wooden spoon and stirred the sand once more. A lighter band of crushed salt streaked through, then settled under the darker layer. The surface now mirrored a simple principle of weight: fine salt sank beneath coarse sand. Next, he shook a handful of tiny pebbles over one corner, curious about their path. The stones rolled, stopped, then forced a shallow mound to crumble sideways. That small slide set off a fresh dilemma: sand blocked the spoon, yet salt still poured. Kieran laughed and moved the spoon to the clear edge instead of digging deeper. For a moment, uncertainty rippled across the surface; would anything new appear beneath the mix? A sudden flash rose when light from the high lens struck a buried shard, making it reflect green. Nadia paused her polishing, and the cloth froze midway across the fragment. "Did you see that spark?" she asked, leaning closer without touching the tins. Kieran scooped gently until the shard surfaced; it was a marble rimmed with cloudy swirls. Salt crystals clung to its sides, then dropped in a soft trickle onto the table. Overall, the tiny globe looked brighter than any shell they had handled that morning. Kieran set the marble on a flat stone beside the tins. He brushed stray grains off his fingers, and the last specks drifted to the floor.
