English 原文
Emerald streaks crossed the work table, cast by sunlight bending through a thick green bottle.
Forrest rested one forearm on the wood while Glynis turned a page of her notebook beside him. Between them sat a shallow glass dish of water. Three sorting trays and a hand lens glinted each time the emerald streaks shifted. A dozen smooth pebbles lined the top edge of an open sketch pad. The pad curved slightly and formed a gentle ramp toward the window. Forrest tapped the uppermost stone with his thumb, curious about its weight against the paper grain.
The stone picked up speed, rattled across two pale lines of graphite, and stopped at the dish rim. A faint click merited a second try, so Forrest nudged another pebble from a slightly higher spot. This one rolled farther, struck the glass, and sent a soft ring through the room. "That one sounded like a bell!" Glynis said, leaning closer. Glynis laughed and gave the pad a gentle jog with her knuckle, starting three small stones at once. They bumped against each other, changed direction, and gathered behind the first pair like passengers at a door. Forrest tried to persuade Glynis to predict the next winner. She only raised an eyebrow and kept her finger on the ramp.
During the fourth roll, a pebble clipped the tray edge and fell into the dish. The splash sent one tiny wave over the rim and across a cluster of pressed leaves. The water loosened something metal hidden beneath them, and a thumb-sized figure slid into view. Its helmet, torch, and thick gloves marked it as a miniature welder, long forgotten among the shells. Forrest lifted the small worker between two fingertips, surprised by the weight trapped in such a tiny body. He set it upright beside the queue of pebbles. Its metal boots caught a new stripe of emerald light and held it still. The pebbles stayed lined on the slanted pad, waiting. Forrest kept one palm on the paper, and the tiny welder faced the ramp.
