Farrah sat near one end, her canvas bag parked between her and Renn. She tipped a small tin box inside her bag, liking how three coins clinked and answered each other. Faint sunlight crossed the floorboards, and a cool scent of old pine rose where the heat paused. The scene stayed familiar; they had waited many mornings here for the same slow train.

A low hum rolled out from the distant curve, reaching the platform before the engine appeared. The hum began to interact with the hollow boards beneath the bench. That vibration turned Farrah's coin song into a loose rattle. “Hear that?” Renn said. “The seat is singing.” Farrah pressed her palm on the iron armrest.
