Curiosity nudged her to explore the rest of the roll. She shifted left, pinched a different corner, and drew it toward her. Blue paint flexed across the cloth and described choppy water under a proud walrus balancing a paper crown. Her tug loosened the rod; its end sprang free and tapped a shield once used in loyalty scenes. The shield tilted, slipped against a shelf, and pressed on a small tin crown hiding behind folded cloaks. That crown bounced off the rim, rolled in a quick curve, and stopped by Yasmin’s shoe. "I lost that prop last spring," Ned said, laughing softly.

Yasmin placed the crown on the shield, and the loosened canvas sagged a little in relief. A stretch of fabric now hung lower, showing more of the painted sea than before. A brown beetle landed on the crown, traced the rim, then trundled toward the dark curtain.
