"Stay where I can find you," she said, pressing a knee against the map while one hand steadied the wheel over the first root-raised ridge. Each thump travelled through the steering column into her collarbones, a Morse code tapped by the buried timber beneath the tarmac.

Condensation re-formed. Almost without thought, her wrist repeated an old kitchen motion: a quick half-circle learned from wiping bakery glass. The sleeve’s cuff left an arc on the screen, but unlike flour-dust on a display case, the warming glass smeared the moisture into a dappled fan that bent sunlight into prismatic glare. Vision sharpened in one slice, blurred in another; she blinked, eased the throttle, then cracked the window wider. A deeper breath of forest air answered, and with it drifted a faint woody scent.
