English 原文
No ripple broke the glassy surface around Orla’s ankles this late afternoon at low tide. Beside her boots, a thin row of broken-shell impressions stitched the damp sand, a fragile footprint trail already softening under every gentle lap. Beyond that trace the reef shimmered like stained glass: branching towers, mounded domes, plates stacked in uneven tiers. She balanced a shallow wooden tray in one palm, already crowded with ochre sponge crumbs, a pink shard of sea-glass, and three damp coral chips. Each time she added something, droplets slid from the tray and the salt tasted sharp against her upper lip. Between swallows, a mellow sweetness lingered, as though the mixed debris carried its own quiet aftertaste.
She could keep pace with the guide ahead, yet her feet chose to dawdle, stirring pale spirals of sand. A heron stood on the coral crest, its stiff neck angled with a parental solemnity toward the water where juvenile fish flickered. Orla tilted the tray, letting a ribbon of water trickle across the surface and taste faintly metallic before dripping away. She added yet another small relic—a spiral worm shell lighter than a button—even as the wooden rim began to press unsteadily against her wrist. Oren called from a few paces ahead, “Clear view over here,” his bamboo pointer hovering above a violet coral fan. She raised a hand in reply but kept sorting, the tray now a patchwork mosaic too crowded to understand at a glance.
The wooden rim finally wobbled, and a cowrie slid over the edge, splashing down and clouding the water with chalky dust. Orla froze; the sudden opacity masked the footprint chain she had admired, the trace that first drew her eyes to the shallows. A quick jog toward Oren would spare the reef more silt, yet her shoulders stayed level while the murk settled. Two damselfish drifted into view, performed a brief face off above the fallen shell, and darted apart like mismatched punctuation marks. Watching their collision of colors, she let her fingers loosen, and the tray dipped until water lapped across its surface. She whispered a quick breath, then began to declutter, lifting each fragment, tasting the briny wetness, and lowering most pieces back onto the sand. What remained—a single coral chip scored with the same delicate impressions as the sand trail—rested in the center of the tray, suddenly readable.
When the clouded water cleared, the earlier footprint chain had faded; gentle currents had filled each hollow with a finer, lighter sand. The echo on the coral chip, however, stayed sharp, its miniature dents casting crisp shadows under the revived sunlight. Orla’s shoulders lowered, and she let the emptied tray float beside her knee, surface tension holding it still. A faint metallic taste lingered, sweeter now, as saltwater rinsed every corner clean again. She lifted the patterned coral chip toward the sun, rotating it slowly until light filled each tiny print with pale gold.
