English 原文
The cable’s hum deepened as the spool let out another loop, the brake clicking once, then again. On the main monitor a pale disc moved into the mellow beam, edges breathing like cloth held under air. My left hand rested on the moulded nylon joystick, cool and smooth; my right thumb hovered a beat above its nubbed hat switch. Palmer sat forward with his forearms on the console; “Ninety-eight,” he said, and the depth gauge ticked its single-metre step. I touched the steel sheath where it met the hull fitting; dried brine flaked away under a thumbnail and left a fine grit. In the tray below the clipboard a knockaround pencil waited, short and blunt, its eraser worn to a pink sliver.
I nudged the stick a millimetre to port, then kept still for the delay; one second later the lamp cone slid left. The disc stayed centered, untroubled; the water swallowed each small correction and left the picture unchanged. Tiny flakes drifted across the picture and dissolved into the dark; another nudge vanished, another wait, same quiet sway on the screen. A recollection of a field guide page glinted — speckled wings like kites — then thinned, because the outline refused to match it. Outside the frame a ribbon of kelp crossed the beam and went on, and the sonar trace wrote another pale line without fuss.
The beam found ground that leveled out — a low plateau of pale sand — and still the disc held, shallow marks dimpled around its rim. Yvette, the conservator, stepped in from the corridor and leaned on the doorjamb, salt air slipping past her sleeve; “Depth looks steady,” she said. I eased forward, then stopped mid-press, my thumb hovering; the lag lived in the gap between what my hand sent and what arrived. Another faint pulse from the thrusters turned grains without clouding them; the picture absorbed the input and stayed the same. The next pulse met a threshold. The disc trembled, then lifted whole, a small skate lifting like a coin off velvet. Spots arranged like eyes showed along its back; a soft undulation carried it a body length, and the sand settled where it had lain.
The skate angled out of the beam and became a graphite shade, but the plateau stayed in view, thin ripples catching the light near the edge. Palmer let his exhale ride the room’s hum; no one spoke, and the monitors warmed the skin on my cheeks. My palm returned to the joystick I had met at the start, and I noticed a shallow nick just under the thumb rest, smooth from use. The brake on the spool gave a single courteous click, the cable holding a steady, salt-rough tension near the hull fitting. I set my thumb into that nick and eased the stick a breath toward the shadowed skate.
