English 原文
Cool shade pooled around the bench where Thea rested her palm, while beyond the low wall the sundial flashed in bare noon light. Beside her, a copper spout let fall drips onto gravel at irregular intervals, and the tiny splashes marked time she could hear but not keep. The can leaned against the stone, its weight steady, its mouth beading a droplet that lengthened, trembled, and then released. Another gathered; another delayed; the cadence staggered, resumed, then paused again. A small wooden spindle wound with green twine rolled a palm’s width along the bench’s slight slope before a seam in the stone checked it. She steadied it, set it near her thigh, and turned her head back to the glare. Bees worked the lavender in a softer cycle, their visits rising and falling with the flowers’ sway.
The bronze gnomon threw a blade of shadow across the dial’s worn hour lines, and its placement changed only when she looked away and returned. High above, a sheen of thin cloud slid quickly along the jetstream, and when a band crossed the sun the dial went blank in a breath. A mother and daughter passed on the path, their steps pressing thyme into a peppery release that drifted up, then thinned. Sunlight reappeared; the shadow had advanced a sliver toward the rosemary bed, and the pattern on the dial—a fan of graven rays—waited for that next landing like bars waiting for a note. She flattened her hand on the limestone face and winced at the warmth, then traced a gap with one knuckle, counting space instead of numbers. She lifted a slim twig from the gravel border and planted it straight; a second line fell beside the gnomon’s, close now, destined to drift.
She lifted the can to rinse the thyme but paused mid-tilt as the light dimmed again; the twig’s line vanished with the gnomon’s in the same instant. The drip held at the spout, fattened, and refused to fall. Sun slid free of the cloud; the waiting drop let go right as the shadow reappeared one notch over. Her breathing matched that landing before any counting could begin. Rafael, seated at the end of the bench, pointed once, softly: “There.” A cabbage white touched the gnomon, folded, and lifted as the metal warmed its feet.
Thea watched the twin shadows separate: the twig’s slight tilt gave it a different tempo, and their angles edged apart with every lull and surge. She left the can upright and looped a strand from the spindle around a lavender stem, the knot small and loose so the breeze could pass without strain. When the cloud field thinned, the dial filled again; the stone wore a faint crescent of cool where the blade had been a minute earlier. She set her hand back—same palm, same place—but slower this time, letting the limestone tell its temperature line under her skin.
