That remembered rhythm settled in before thought; her hands completed pour after pour while her intuition hovered elsewhere, questioning nothing. The only tangible change lay in the faint shimmer that danced on leaves when droplets leapt away and disappeared.

The next ribbon of water struck the surface and stalled; instead of sinking, it pooled, wobbling like clear gelatin across the moss. A second later, a thin bubble burped from the drainage mesh, then another, slower, until the tray received a sudden surge that splashed her cuff. Rhea jerked back at the bench’s low tremor, then crouched to peer beneath the pot where a clot of fine roots had blocked the outlet. Instinct carried her wrist into that pastry-turning twist, rocking the pot's corner against the bench slat. A quiet crack released the tangle, and murky water surged through the mesh, overflowing the tray in one sudden sheet.

She set the copper can beside the bench; droplets slid along its neck and fell through the same barred shadow now resting on the far slat. Liora, trimming a sapling near the wall, paused mid-snip, glanced over the rim of her glasses, and asked, “All clear?” Rhea nodded, yet her hand lingered on the cedar bench; the wood felt warmer now than at noon.
