English 原文
Birch ducked through the half-height door into the organ room, rag already working a tarnished brass collar. Warm leather breathed from the bellows as the perforated book clacked forward, one pleat at a time. Oil glistened on worn gear teeth, and the drive shaft across the wall sent a mild tremor along the floorboards. At the outset, he traced a late note to the reader's pivot, a steel pin dulled by time. He set a fine screwdriver on the collar, then paused, listening to the jaunty melody floating in from the carousel. The cadence in here arrived raw and close, pipe mouths bright as coins, breath sliding through brass and wood. He bent to the tracker bar, hands steady, eyes on the narrow gaps where holes met air.
Knuckles rapped on the hatch; he straightened, and the clack kept counting without him. Zara edged in with a box stamped by travel, its corners scuffed, its tape darkened by dust and fingerprints. "New cards," she said, setting it near the stool; the single bulb haloed the crease in the cardboard. "Busy?" she asked, glancing at the bellows; Birch folded the rag and shifted the stool to make space. "Always," he said, and they nudged the parcel flush against the wall, paper rasping softly over the grain. A mild draught disturbed the settled dust, and the nearest reed wavered for one beat before the bellows steadied it.
When Birch turned back, the book had advanced; a frayed fold brushed the frame and left a feather of lint. A brief, garrulous chatter flicked from a reed pipe, not loud, but enough to ruffle the tidy run of notes. He reached for the screwdriver, set it down, and brought up a fingernail instead, testing the burr along the cut edge. Zara rested a palm on the bellows guard, and the breathing steadied; her free hand hovered near the nearest pipe. Together they held the air's shape: her hand smoothing pressure, his thumb clearing lint, the fold easing true. The next pleat entered cleanly, yet the room's rhythm had shifted; outside, the ride had moved to another tune. Birch tapped the reader frame and matched the new cadence, resetting his rag, his stance, his count. Warm leather stayed on his palm, a soft print of the bellows' steady work.
