English 原文
Dry grain from a flat stone dusted Neve's palm, and a cool damp oval lay in its center. She set her metal canteen by her knee while crouching on blue-grey gravel under the open wind. Marco worked a few paces away, where he had arranged a ring of thin chips around his base. Light from the water threw quick silver onto wet stones, then left them grey again as each small wave withdrew. Neve lifted a half-submerged slab, its underside slick, and the algae tang rose while water ran off in threads. She set it over the damp oval, but a gust pressed the upper edge sideways the instant her hand left. Neve swapped in a drier base from the pile and rotated until a narrow ridge caught and held.
Her heel sank into the loose chips as she slid the base, and the ground clicked a faint chain of rattles. One chip left Marco's ring, then another, and his outline slumped on one side like dry sand settling. He tilted his head toward the gap and said, "That side went loose," then moved his fingers back from the edge. Neve brushed the oval with her palm, clearing the powder, and a smoother patch showed where another stone had polished it. She paused between going taller or fixing the ring, then kept the base but slid it half a thumb-width outward. With her free hand, she wedged a flat flake under Marco's weak side and pressed grit over the slick patch. The dry stone pile two paces back breathed pale dust when she lifted, and a bleached sprig of heath lay trapped.
Wind carried a clean metallic smell from the water, and a nearby column released one pebble that clicked and settled. Their two builds now shared space; hers stood shorter and broader, his ring returned yet open at one corner. Marco bent from the waist in a tiny reverence toward the steady stack, a joking bow that stayed above the stones. Neve exhaled and said, "It holds," then touched the cooler patch again to watch the top settle into it. Grey dust from their hands streaked the base in arcs, and powder smudged the edge where their fingers had steadied. Neve pressed her dusty thumb onto the base stone and left a small pale print.
