English 原文
Hartley struck the medium drum beside Blair, wrists loose, as the platform passed a tangible thump up his arches and the canopy threw back a quick, bright ring.
Their notes landed close yet not the same, disparate edges of the head catching overtones that sent one stroke low and the other glancing higher near the rim.
Blair tipped a chin toward the sensei's raised bachi and said, "That one sat higher," as Hartley eyed the center and lifted his sticks again.
Sweat traced his wrists and darkened the stick handles where grip met wood, and the lacquered barrels wore a soft band where years of fingers had settled.
He struck nearer the rim, rebound jabbing his wrists, the note brighter, while Blair’s drum gave a rounder bloom that reached his ribs before the ears caught up.
Hartley halted mid-lift on the next beat, sticks hovering above pale hide, and his grip loosened as the raised bachi stayed aloft, a breath stretched across the planks.
Blair’s mouth shaped a small O, then closed, and both sticks lowered to rest against the rims while stage air cooled their forearms.
Evening air moved through the open sides, cool on forearms, while the big zelkova body held its low hush like a cup holding warm tea.
Hartley stepped to the side where the bachi rack met a shallow table, and a glass held slender sprigs of yarrow beside a cloth and a capped bottle.
He swallowed, dabbed his wrists, then raised his small camera; the big drum's lacquered barrel shimmered under lights, its scratches and hand-worn gloss worth a close study.
Through the screen, the pale head showed faint scuffs like nested ovals, a patina not at perfect center, and his thumb paused on the zoom.
A bead slid from the bottle's lip onto the hide and left a spot; his cloth passed over it once, and a cleaner crescent edged the worn ring.
The wooden canopy's underside lined the screen's top edge, a dark stripe that made the pale head look even wider.
Blair drifted near and tapped the wooden rim with a knuckle, then glanced at Hartley's screen; the two drums waited, skins flat and matte under the warm lamps.
Hartley exhaled and said, "Yours rounded here," tracing a small air circle, then set one bachi across his own hide where the clean crescent met the scuffed oval.
He slipped the camera into the rack beside the sticks and stepped into stance again, feet braced on two darker boards that showed the group's pattern of standing.
One bachi rested diagonally across the medium drumhead, its rounded tip aligned with the cleaner crescent that brightened the old scuff ring.
The camera sat in the wooden rack, lens hood smudged; the glass of yarrow cast shadows on the planks, a single petal pressed flat near a scuffed board.
Sweat-darkened handles in the bachi rack showed darker ovals where palms had gripped, and a faint humidity glossed the cowhide under the lamps.
