Cardboard Carrier Divides Warm Bowl and Cold Bottle -

English 原文
No two-note chime marked the doorway yet; the glass held a single unbroken rectangle of early-evening blue.
Jasper and Idelle paused at the edge where wet tiles met the darker entry mat, the store a bright box beyond.
Fluorescent light erased shadows, turning the aisles into straight corridors, glossy paper to the left and chilled cases in a long span to the right.
A small tuft on Jasper’s knit cap brushed the sliding seam as the door parted and the notes finally chimed.
They had one essential pairing in mind — a warm wrapped bowl for Idelle and a cold bottle for Jasper.
At the chilled wall, he slid one panel, and cold settled to wrist height while identical bottles stood in ready columns.
His palm met a bottle; the cap’s numbers lay embossed in plastic, tiny ridges catching the even light.
He began to lift, then paused, because the second bottle leaned, and the column wanted more space than the gap allowed.
He nudged the row back along its track and drew the bottle free, a damp ring left on the shelf.
Idelle stood by the hot counter; the microwave’s small chamber glowed above, its door closing into a snug square of sealed air.
Jasper chose a shallow hand basket, its base patterned with embossed arrows and slats that divided the floor into rectangles.
He set the bottle upright in one corner and found the flat square for the bowl narrowed by the bottle’s round.
Turning the bottle diagonally opened space, yet the cylinder rolled toward the slats, leaving the bowl’s perch precarious.
The entrance parted again; a rider crossed with a quick draft, bag handles fluttered, and loose paper lifted then settled by the till.
Beside the hot case, stacked cardboard drink carriers waited; Jasper took one and slid a wing down the basket’s span as a divider.
On the leeward side of that wall, the warm bowl could sit clear of the cold, though the carrier now took up the last free square he had eyed.
The count ended with a bright ding; Idelle lifted the bowl with a sleeve and lowered it into the pocket Jasper had made.
She looked at the arrangement and nodded once, then glanced up at the ceiling panels, reading the long span between fixtures.
“Are you set with that one?” she said, and Jasper pressed the bottle, testing the wedge and the small geometry it created.
“Set,” he said, and at the counter coins crossed smooth plastic before the cashier bagged the bowl on cardboard and the bottle opposite, the two temperatures balanced.
The chime’s two notes waited unplayed; his heel hovered above the metal strip of the doorway, and his hand rested under the bag’s handles.
