A Wet Line on the Boardwalk Rail by the Mineral Pool -

English 原文
Every Saturday, Zeke and Ines reached the same stretch of boardwalk above the mineral pool.
Their elbows found the worn rail again, but a folded tarpaulin occupied the ranger's usual corner.
A corner grommet hooked the tarpaulin to the post, its fabric holding a faint crease where a box had pressed.
Steam lifted in easy breaths, and the warm fragrance of stone and sulfur braided with cool morning air.
Warmth rose through their sleeves from the sunlit rail, while cool air tucked itself below the boards at their ankles.
The rail felt damp under their forearms, not slick, just beaded with tiny drops that rolled together and hesitated at the edge.
Below, a rivulet escaped the pool's lip and threaded the terrace, building a pale rim along its path.
The surface dimpled where a thermal plume arrived, then smoothed as clarity returned over the source vent.
A wagtail skipped across the crust far from the vent, its tail a metronome above travertine too brittle for any heavy step.
A speckled quartz pebble lay settled inside a shallow bowl of white, anchored by the hush of unmoving water on the floor.
Zeke lifted his notebook, then paused with the cover half open, listening to the small plop from the center vent.
Ines pinched her sleeve hem and wiped her glasses, then lowered them again into the thin mist above the overflow.
For a breath, the plopping stopped, and nothing followed except the faint murmur over the lip.
A ranger knelt near them and dipped a slender thermometer into the overflow channel from the railing, then tapped a single bright drop onto the wood.
It ran into a shallow groove worn by seasons of readings, then slowed to a bead just smaller than a pea.
Ines said, "It leaves a line," and her finger stopped just short of the damp mark on the rail.
The tarpaulin showed older freckles where drips had dried to powder, a soft map scattered across its creases.
Zeke angled his notebook against the rail and traced the tarpaulin's speckles with the side of his pencil, then glanced at the faint chalking on the terrace.
The same pale rim along the rivulet mirrored the bead's curve, both bending where the terrace leaned toward the shaded side.
He said, "The edge keeps writing," and lifted the pencil, holding it above the paper the way his palm hovered above the brittle rim.
She moved a half step aside so their shadows cleared the rail, and the wet line kept its glimmer beside the older dust.
Ines set the pencil on the closed notebook and eased her grip from the rail, shoulders settling into the boardwalk's quiet warmth.
Beneath them, bubbles rose through the vent, and steam continued to lift, gather, and fold itself along the pool's breathing surface.
A wagtail's shadow slipped across the notebook and vanished into the steam's pale lift beyond the railing.
