Ring to Measure: A Cup at the Sluice Gate -

English 原文
A tin cup lay upside down on the slab by the gate, a dry ring bright against the darker stone.
Each drop from the lowest plank struck nearby, yet the ring stayed clean, and iron hung faint in the cool air.
Wet clay breathed from the bank, and the stone’s slick skin cooled Etta’s fingertips where she hovered above it.
A low mist lifted just beyond the sunlit bend, carrying a green smell that thinned over the dry path.
Hadley’s palm stayed on the iron handle; a slow lift, a pause, and the murmur’s pitch rose, then settled again.
Etta’s sandals made a small shuffle along the dusted path, the dry scent folding into the channel’s cooler breath.
A narrow footbridge spanned the cut; one floorboard creaked when she tapped it with the side of her shoe.
A dragonfly hung above the cleared water, its wings tilting, then stitching upstream when a lifted arm made shade.
Etta slid two fingers under the cup’s rim and lifted; a tacky hold on the stone resisted for a heartbeat.
Air broke the seal with a puckered sound, and old water breathed iron and faint sweet rot into her nose.
A loop of hemp cord rode the lip, its fibers rough against her thumb and leaving a green, grassy scent.
Inside the tin, shallow notches stepped around the wall, small marks like teeth worn shallow by years of scrubbing.
"It drips from the lower plank," Hadley said, his forearm steady near the gate.
Etta tipped the cup to spill the stale mouthful and wiped the base on her sleeve before she set it down.
Hadley raised the gate a finger’s width; the murmur lifted, and a thin ribbon peeled from a side channel.
Dark spread across one bed while another held pale; proportion stayed written on the stone in two faint sediment bands.
"That ring sat there all morning," Hadley said, eyes on the slab’s bright edge.
She threaded the hemp through the cup handle and found a peg on the post, cinching the loop until the metal steadied.
The drip kept its interval, and the bridge’s loose board gave a dry creak at each slow step she took.
Her fingers paused on the rim as both quiet beats met by her ear.
She set the cup under the drop and watched without counting while the first clear ring reached the brim’s notch.
Those shallow marks turned from ornament to measure as the water climbed, and her palm read their spacing easily.
She tilted the cup a little nearer the drip, slower than before, and a cool splash dotted her wrist.
