Nadia rests her forearms on the wood. Fine flour rubs under her sleeve. An older flour ring sits pale beside her arm. Flour settles. A warm pepper scent hangs here. Steam drifts.

The grandmother holds an open wrapper. The deep bowl shows tiny egg bits. A wooden spoon rests on the rim. A smear of filling shines on it. A small classroom picture is on Nadia's sleeve. Flour dots sit on that picture. A small shell from the beach sits on the sill.

A wrapper edge lifts at the stack. The kitchen breeze nudges it along. It lands on the grandmother's palm. She laughs, soft and short. She says, "Little lines on top."

She sets the wrapper flat again. Her fingers pinch the rim in steps. Light from the window warms a beach shell. Pleated rows stand.
