English 原文
A thin wet sheen slid off the rock and brightened into a pale smudge around the pool’s rim.
Through the damp band, a narrow zigzag traced toward the basin, a scratch nothing else in sight explained.
The basin recessed in clean ovals, one quadrant deepening under the overhang, the opposite side spreading shallow toward open light.
A shell the size of a grape sat near the center shelf, unmoving in water that bent lines at an angle.
Larkin set a small notebook on a dry ledge and drew a cross, his practiced grid laying out four crisp squares.
He had learned to sketch spaces this way, quadrant by quadrant, counting spans and anchoring corners with quick, certain strokes.
The left page kept a faint starchy stiffness from last night’s potato dinner, a pale thumbprint hardened into a roughened patch.
He aligned the notebook’s spine with the pool’s long axis and lifted the pencil to mark the zigzag on the rock.
His point paused over the first square when the pool behaved like a tilted globe, shrinking distances and bending the far edge inward.
The zigzag that looked straight from above slid out of place on the paper; the rock’s lines kinked under the water’s lens.
Larkin lowered the notebook to the stone, then raised it a hair, adjusting the view until the round hollow and shelf lined up.
“Left edge, right edge,” he said, counting the spans with his eyes and tapping two corners of the page to hold the mapping steady.
A ripple crossed the deepest quadrant, and a cascade of tiny bubbles lifted from a tuft of algae near the grape-sized shell.
The shell shifted across a shallow ledge, its mouth hidden, and the zigzag on the damp rock matched the angle of that slow passage.
He stopped mid-stroke, then drew the line again, not on guesswork this time but by aligning the page to the route the shell traced.
“So, not a scratch,” he breathed, and he nudged the pencil point to mirror the turn where the ledge narrowed toward the overhang.
When the shell settled and the water steadied, his gaze slipped back to the first pale smudge the receding sheen had left.
It held a thin glitter now, tiny salt points pricking the rim, and the zigzag’s start looked sharper against the drying band.
He angled the notebook spine to the same arc around the basin and penciled a faint bracket to mark the curve of the smudge.
Larkin touched the smudge with the pencil tip on the rock, then pressed the same point to the page and carried the line across.

“For a moment, the pool turned globe-like, tilting the far edge inward and foreshortening every span.”
- smudge
“He traced a faint bracket to follow the smudge curving like salt-lit light around the rim.”
