Uma pushed the metal handle down. Water rushed into a small channel by the garden bed. Jonas set a stone along the edge. Cool mist brushed over their sleeves.

The water cut into the soil and pulled it. A clump slid down and blocked the narrow notch. Water rose behind the plug and spilled over. It ran across the path toward the harvest basket.

It slipped under a loose brick and came out farther. A thin sheet spread under the basket’s base and pooled. The alfalfa bed sat dry along one side.

Jonas grabbed a board from a stack and ran. He lowered it into the channel near the split. The board turned the flow back toward the alfalfa. Uma pressed mud at the edges to seal gaps. The basket still dripped, and water lines crossed the path. A thin thread still ran along the board’s lower edge.
