The cat angled toward a low skiff, where a sheet of canvas hung over shade. Its quiet quest across the dock met a circle of bright tin in its path. It paused, and a front limb hovered above the lid with a small tremble. The metal had baked under the sun; the touch stung, and the paw lifted fast. It tried the side, but a stripe of softened wax on a seam pulled at its pads. The cat tugged free, and a faint print stayed in the shiny smear on the wood. "It is warm today," said Quinn by the railing, setting a small cup on the bench.

Quinn twisted a thermos open; a soft hiss rose, and steam rolled into the sun. The cloud thinned; glare returned, yet the steam hung and warmed the air near whiskers. A warm ring spread on the bench under the cup and faded at the edge. The cat turned from the skiff and let the shaded gap be. It padded to the cup, touched the warm rim, and lightly tapped.
