"What is in that gap?" Orla steps onto the soft rug. She kneels by the wall. A faint tea smell drifts. A thin gap waits between two toys. She looks through the gap. Her knees rest on the fold. The fold line deepens. A pale floor patch shows.

Dust floats. The room is silent. A bright stripe rests on the wall. The edge slides a little. The toy-shape blurs and shifts. Orla turns her head left. "I sit right here," the grandmother says. She sits on the wooden chair. A mug rests on the arm. A small plate rests on her lap. A slice of tomato rests there. A small piece of cheese rests there.

Orla walks to the chair side. Two wooden slats make a slim opening. She looks through the slats at the glass. Beyond the glass, the sky looks pale. A slow cloud moves across it.

She shifts her eyes to the mug. The grandmother lowers it onto the arm. The base meets the wood. It clicks on the wood.
