English 原文
The bamboo dipper sat on the sun-warm rim with its handle shining, slicker than wood ought to be.
Max pressed his palm to the smooth stone, checking the warmth that the afternoon had stored there. Beside him, Yasmin rested on the low chair, her shadow touching the rim but not the still water. The surface held two worlds at once—cloud and tree mirrored above, silt and old flat stones resting below. Warm wet-stone scent rose from the grandfather's rim-stones, braided with the soft green smell of lotus leaves resting flat.
A single fallen leaf drifted from the edge toward the centre, and Max reached for it with the dipper. His fingers tightened against the shining handle, and the tool twisted slightly, sending a small disturbance across the mirror. The mirrored cloud shivered where the arc spread, while the flat stones below stayed crisp beneath his searching shadow. Moisture beaded between the slats of bamboo, and a slow fish paused under the wavering band of light. "It smells like wool," Yasmin said, rubbing her thumb along the glossy handle and lifting it toward the light. A faint lanolin sheen brightened her fingertips, leaving the wood a little too sleek for a steady hold.
Max wrapped his sleeve around the handle, then stopped, sleeve fibers darkening as they drank up the glinting slickness. Yasmin unfolded a soft handkerchief from her pocket and offered it, not as instruction, simply as another surface to try. The patient motions shaped a small apprenticeship in balance—hands learning the give of cloth, wood, water, and leaf. Their elbows hovered above the rim, careful not to brush the algae-soft band that marked last spring's higher waterline. The cloth bit gently against the grain, and their two hands found one rhythm—his guiding the rim, hers steadying the wrist. A dragonfly hovered over a lotus leaf from a clay pot, wings whirring like a tiny propeller, its glittering beat scattering dots of sun around their knuckles.
As the dipper slid under the leaf, a spinning seed dropped from the yard tree and touched down nearby, its landing rings brushing the target. Max checked mid-scoop, breath held, then continued slower, the cloth-wrapped handle resisting slip while the bowl stayed level and quiet. Together they lifted the leaf and rested it on the rim-stone, water running off in threads that cooled Max's palm. Another leaf, farther out, turned on the faint ripple and eased beyond reach, and neither moved to chase it with the tool. "Here," Yasmin said, folding the handkerchief back into her pocket, the fabric creasing along the damp line it had carried. From the house, a low murmur drifted through the half-open window and thinned as it crossed the grass toward them. Max set the dipper where it had been, pressed his palm to the same stone again, and found it now cooler under the thin shade.
