English 原文
Haida stood beside the narrow channel as Nestor set both hands on the wooden handle of the diversion gate.
Water ran clear along the main trench, then lifted over the low weir and combed itself into tiny ridges that hissed against the grooves.
She set a count in her mouth for when the bean rows would darken, followed sound and sparkle, and counted seconds with her breath.
The channel bent near them, and stones jutted from the inside bank, tilting the surface so one stripe of flow moved quicker than the rest.
Nestor eased the gate up a hand’s width, and the handle pressed back with a steady push while his sleeves tightened near the elbow.
Haida kept the numbers, lost them at the bend, set them again, then stopped when a bright flare hid the water’s seam.
She let the count go and stepped onto the drier path, where a canvas bag hung from a peg on the post, waiting for hands.
Inside lay an ear of dry corn; she pried kernels loose, caught them in her palm, then poured them into the bag.
Each kernel clicked against the fabric, quick and separate, then slower when two clung together by a flake of pale skin.
Her shoulder still held the pulse of the weir’s tumble, though her eyes rested on the bag’s open mouth and the small yellow pile.
A heat haze trembled above the water, and the bank’s dark edge marked where yesterday’s soak had reached before the ground swallowed it.
A high cloud crossed the sun without warning, and the glare eased so the moving skin of the channel offered a faint glimmer down its middle.
Haida’s hand, mid-pour, paused above the bag, and the last few kernels waited there in a tiny huddle that almost fell.
The softened light thinned the shimmer into stripes, and ridges over the weir beat a plain pattern that reached her ears and settled under her ribs.
One kernel tipped from her fingers with a click that met the first ridge, and the next click met the next ridge past the stone that jutted.
She tried the pairing twice more, then twice again, until a small, holdable space opened between the beats and rested there.
Downstream, the soil inched from one furrow into the next, its edge crawling along the row and leaving a new, darker band behind.
She kept the final kernel in her palm and looked beyond the weir toward the rows, her jaw quiet so the counted tempo stayed intact.
Nestor shifted his grip by a finger’s width and waited, while the side channel whispered along packed earth and the lifted handle shone with damp.
Haida left the bag open on the post and breathed with the ridges, her wrist loosening as the count arranged itself by sound alone.
The cloud slid on, the glare returned, and the stripes hid themselves in quick glitter, yet the tempo sat under her thumb on the last kernel.
Farther down, the field carried a revised map, one dark band widening between rows while small insects stitched steady paths along the new margin.
She folded her fingers around the small weight and stood beside Nestor, as water kept its soft hiss and the bag held a steadier pile.
