A ceiling fan turns above the table on a short pole. Air moves in little waves over plates and napkins. The napkin by her cup lifts, then settles, then lifts again. Iris looks up and watches one full turn of the fan. A tiny click comes from the joint each time it passes.

Between blades, the napkin lies flat for a quick beat. Iris waits for that calm space and holds her breath. She pinches a corner and slides it under the cool cup. The cup tilts a little, and the ice clinks once. A round bead runs down and dots her fork handle.

The printed mouse on the napkin gets a tiny wet dot. New drops land on the napkin, not on the mat. The fan keeps turning, and the ice clinks again.
