The sill paint felt oddly powdery against York’s fingertip, giving off a chalk-dry smell even though the surface looked glossy. He eased the cool glass forward a centimetre, chasing a sour-sweet band of orange light that slid across the wall. Warm dust hung in the beam, and a faint chlorine tang rose from the water. Tiny bubbles had been trapped along the inner rim; each one bent the light and blurred the violet edge, so he lifted the base to regain control. The lift nudged a smooth pebble that Blythe had parked as a paperweight; the pebble rolled, struck a pencil, and the pencil tapped the curtain hem. Fabric swung once, scattering a musty cotton scent and shifting the rainbow again. Blythe steadied the curtain with her elbow, then touched York’s sleeve to reassure him that the colours still held.
A sharp kettle whistle burst from the kitchen. Without a word, York hurried to retrieve the pot before it boiled dry; steam in the next room carried a yeasty, cinnamon aroma from their parent’s baking. During those brief steps, a stray cloud muted the sunlight. By the time he returned, the beam had crept rightward, and the spectrum no longer met the wall but stretched across the floorboards. The pebble, freed by the earlier bump, continued its journey; it struck the wooden ruler that their retired mentor had once carved. The ruler slid toward the sill edge, threatening to topple the glass. York’s shoulders jerked, yet the polished wood offered little friction. Blythe reacted first: she folded a oven mitt and wedged it beneath the ruler. The slide slowed, then stopped; cinnamon steam still drifted at the doorway, validating their swift rescue without a word spoken.
They left the mitt in place and angled the glass a fraction toward the shifting sun. New lines of lime-green light wriggled across the floorboards, faint but clear. Dusty warmth from the window drifted slowly toward the kitchen doorway.
