He sets it in the basket.
A small wave rolls forward.
The wave bumps the basket.
Shells slide onto the ground.
Pebbles click.
Max takes one careful step back.
He sees the scattered shells.
He gathers each shell again.
He places them on the same rock.
The tide pool looks unchanged.
His mother waves from the planks.
Max cannot find one tiny shell.
He lifts seaweed and spots it.
He slides the seaweed back.
The shell rests beside the others.
Quiet air hangs over the rocks.
A hawk glides low above the sand.
