A dry scritch rasped along the chalk face when Dinah's trowel snagged a rough grey nub. The brief tremor freed a pea-sized chip that pinged against a water bottle covered in leaping platypus shapes and sent the bottle rattling toward the pit rim. Plastic knocked wood; the bottle skittered along a stake and bumped the soft-bristle brush, the handle flicking up to rap a metal sifting tray with a hollow ring. Grid strings, which had been stretched tight at sunrise, twanged under the jolt, but nothing toppled. Dust hissed through the warm air while Dinah steadied her knees and laid the trowel beside the numbered square.

She climbed the wooden step and left the pit, the shaken tray still humming against her palm. At the sifting table, she tipped the tray and ran chalk crumbs across the mesh; grains whispered through while harder bits rattled in short bursts. A tooth-shaped fleck refused to fall, so she flicked it into her open notebook for later comparison. Next, she crossed to the shade canopy where Ivy knelt, sketching layers on a clipboard. Dinah perched on a rolled blanket that served as a makeshift sofa and motioned for the magnifying lens. Light glinted off the lens rim as she inspected the fleck; its surface showed fine ridges like the back of a chrysanthemum petal. If it had been only a pebble, the ridges would have looked random. She logged the square number, then brushed chalk from her elbows and headed back toward the pit.

Back in her square, the trowel stood upright where dust had half-buried it; Ivy had probably rescued it. A breeze drifted through, overturning the platypus bottle again, and the plastic rolled toward the brush. Dinah slid one boot sideways, blocking it before contact so the chain could not repeat. She held the trowel a shade flatter than before and drew it along the chalk. The blade rode the layer instead of biting, and the grey nub thinned to powder with a faint sigh. Water from the disturbed bottle had overcome the shallow lip of the grid and pooled near her boot, but her wrist held halfway through the sweep, chalk dust curling upward in a pale arc.
